I learned more in my first guitar lesson with Rex Bell than in 6 months with my previous guitar instructor
For my first in-home guitar lesson in Livermore CA. I had only my guitar, but Rex brought his guitar, tablet, an instructional booklet, and a great attitude.
Rex started off by explaining some of his extensive background, followed by asking me a couple of questions about myself and my guitar experience He finished by reviewing the lesson booklet and playing a short song. He explained some basics of guitar playing, including parts of the guitar, an easy way to remember string names, and where the guitar should be placed when playing – a ton of information that was easy to follow which I had not learn in the entire duration of my lessons back when I was 15.
On top of this, Rex set me up with a finger stretching activity that would help ease me back into playing by getting my fingers nice and limber before each guitar practice session.
At the end of the lesson, he e-mailed me what was expected the following week, had me download an app (PitchLab Lite) on my smart phone to tune my guitar (farewell to the metronomes and tuners I had collected in the past), and sent me an instant payment receipt. He waited for me to download the app and made sure I knew how to use it before leaving. It has proven to be an effective, quick, and easy tool to tune my guitar regularly.
Homework after the first lesson was straight-forward and reasonable for a beginner guitar player. Rex let me know that I could learn at my own pace and he was simply there to help guide me, making it a much more comfortable learning environment than I had previously experienced. I felt like I learned much more in this first lesson than I had learned in 6 months with my previous instructor. Everything felt much easier – must be the teaching technique. Updates on progress to follow in future blogs soon!
